Good kids, good schools create great outcomes

This is an editorial that recently appeared in the August 16 issue of the Traverse City Record Eagle.  Just as much as we are focusing on things that need to be improved with our schools, we also need to highlight the amazing students that pass through their doors and what they are able to become because of what is working well within our schools.

Editorial: Good kids, good schools create great outcomes.

August is Connected Educator Month

Just as students need the opportunity to connect with other students, teachers need to connect and collaborate with other teachers.  Many times these opportunities to connect occur online.  Collaboration occurs.  Ideas are shared.  New tools are discussed and critiqued.  The number of new technology tools that can be used by teachers in the STEM arena continues to grow.  Many teachers might be hesitant to use new tools unless they hear testimonials from other teachers or are given ideas for how to use them.

Connecting educators with online communities to advance their professional learning is the goal of the first Connected Educator Month, a U.S. Department of Education initiative that kicks off today, August 1, and continues through the month. The flurry of keynotes, panel discussions, book chats, and other interactive online events should give participants plenty to think about and, more importantly, discuss with colleagues as they head into the new school year.

Please come back and share if you do attend any of the events offered!
