Girls and Women in STEM website

I came across a  website  that offers a little different perspective regarding STEM and that is that it covers girls and women in STEM.  Through this website you can learn about female engineers and scientists and learn about their work.  As the mother of three daughters, I found it a refreshing change from the standard STEM profile that I am used to seeing.

According to a white paper produced by the U.S. Department of Commerce entitled Women in STEM: A Gender Gap in Innovation, although women fill close to half of all jobs in the U.S. economy, they hold less than 25 per- cent of STEM jobs.   The same paper  it was found that women with STEM jobs earned 33 percent more than comparable women in non-STEM jobs – considerably higher than the STEM premium for men.  According to the Census Bureau’s 2009 American Community Survey (ACS), women comprise 48 per- cent of the U.S. workforce but just 24 percent of STEM workers.

These are just some of the reasons to introduce girls to the idea of a STEM professions and I think this website is a fun and easy way to do that.
